Falcon still flies high - Summer 2012

This summer edition shines upon one very special public house set amongst the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Falcon, Arnliffe

View of Arncliffe villageArncliffe is a traditional farming community of 85 souls in the beautifully formed valley of Littondale. Close to Gordale Scar, Malham Cove and Kilnsey Crag, the area is full of wild pastures on craggy hillsides with rocky tops and exposed moorland. Situated just off the B6160 through Upper Wharfedale, Littondale greets you with stunning scenery of green hillsides and limestone scars, the meandering river Skirfare and a beautiful conservation area which encompasses the village of Arncliffe. Sitting on a gravel delta above the river‘s floodplain Arncliffe has a large village green, surrounded by stone cottages with small crofts behind them and overlooked by larger fields, separated by dry-stone walls on the upper slopes.

At the heart of this lovely village is the Grade II listed Falcon Inn. Run by the Miller family for four generations this very traditional Dales inn has recently seen the day-to-day running taken on by Peter and Julie Carlton. The ivy-covered stone pub has remained largely untouched by modernity with a residential lounge and dining room, a public drinking area and a sympathetic extension which offers a bit more drinking space. A flagstone floor leads you to a small bar with no hand pumps and a few shelves for bottled products. The casks are racked on a simple stillage behind the bar. The LocAle beer on offer is Timothy Taylor Best Bitter at 4% ABV and it is the only beer available. It is served into your glass from a ceramic jug, the beer having been taken straight from the cask.

The front view of the Falcon, ArncliffeRecognised by some as the original Woolpack in Emmerdale, the Falcon is all about people, it‘s a place to meet and greet and discuss the day‘s happenings. It‘s a place to relax with a pint in front of an open fire. It‘s a place to stay overnight in comfortable accommodation and enjoy hearty home cooking. It‘s a place to drop into for a beer and lunchtime snack after enjoying the fantastic walking area that is the Yorkshire Dales. It‘s a place to go fishing for brown trout along four miles of the river Skirfare and it is a place to forget about the day to day struggles of modern life.

There are many well-run pubs with quality real ale and good service in the Dales but the Falcon offers that something “extra” in the way that you‘re greeted and served and in the general atmosphere of the pub that you won‘t find in many modernised hostelries. It‘s a must-visit if you find yourself in the dales and a must-organise-to-get-to if you don‘t! You can get to the Falcon by car, foot or bicycle. There is no direct public transport up Littondale but the Dales Bus website will provide details of the services along the Upper Wharfedale route and if you enjoy a ramble, the pub is within reasonable walking distance from numerous points such as Kettlewell or Kilnsey.
