Boltmakers Arms, Keighley

Welcome to Keighley – You’ll never leave! - Not if this pub is anything to go by at the moment!

The Boltmakers Arms is one of many Keighley town pubs which you could say hark back to “the good old days” of ‘locals’ – unpretentious friendly boozers where you can sup decent ale at reasonable prices and - shock horror! - have conversations with the licensees and other customers.

Boltmakers Arms POTS presentation

This pub has a long-standing history of being one of Keighley’s better alehouses. Phil and Val Booth took over from previous licensees Ray and Eileen Green on the 17th January 2005. They had never run their own pub before and certainly had a hard act to follow. Phil has worked in various Keighley pubs over the years and has always wanted to become a Landlord himself, young family commitments have prevented him up to now. In my opinion, the ten (yes only ten!) weeks up to this award being decided have seen him take like the proverbial duck to liquor, raising what was already a high standard for the pub and demonstrating superb cellarmanship to serve real ale in pristine condition. In addition to the existing four handpumps serving Taylor Golden Best, Best Bitter, Landlord plus guest ale, two more have been added which are dispensing Taylor Dark Mild and various real ciders at the time of writing.  On top of this Phil and Val are both friendly, welcoming and enthusiastic about their new career as fine-ale house proprietors. The pub itself whilst being tiny and having a bizarre split-level floor layout is cosy and nicely decorated. It is located close to both bus and rail stations. I am pleased to see it win Pub Of the Season Summer 2005, hooray!

Right that’s enough prattle from me I’m thirsty mines a pint of Taylor’s /Ossett Excelsior/Moorhouses Blond Witch/Kelham Island Pale rider/Wharfedale Executioner....................Phil!
