The Swan, Addingham

It‘s not long ago that the Swan in Addingham was awarded an Improved Pub Award by Keighley and Craven CAMRA. Since then, the commitment to real ale, far from diminishing, has increased, if that were possible. At the August branch meeting, that commitment was rewarded when members voted the Swan Pub of the Season Autumn 2010 against stiff opposition, the only pub in Addingham to ever such an award.

Presentation of Pub of the Season to the Swan, Addingham, September 2010Ian and Nikki Frost took over the pub in May 2008 and are to be congratulated for their many achievements, including the refurbishment of the kitchen and toilets durung what has been a difficult time for many publicans. A warm welcome is also extended to customers by Jess, a 4-year old Old English Sheepdog that was rescued from previous owners. The pub, nearly 200 years old, retains a traditional four room layout with a central bar, and remains at the centre of the village in more ways than one. Rumours abound that the pub is haunted, perhaps arising from the building‘s previous use as a mortuary.

The beer range features local ales from the SIBA direct delivery scheme as well as some from the national beer list of Enterprise Inns. A recent development is the introduction of a Brewery of the Month feature, encouraging a brewery to supply a variety of ales. September‘s featured brewery was Saltaire. The Swan is a participant in the branch‘s Locale scheme.

On top of the interesting range of beers, there are many other reasons to visit the Swan for example for a quiet meal, a game of darts or for entertainment from a live band. Locally sourced good pub grub is available five days a week (not Monday or Tuesday) including Sunday lunch. Live music evenings are Monday (folk), Tuesday (acoustic) while various styles of bands play on Saturdays. Quiz night is Wednesday from 9 P.M. Walkers, cyclists and dogs (as long as they are on a lead) are all welcome.

The Swan opens at 17.30 Monday and Tuesday and at 12.00 and 17.30 Wednesday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday hours extend all day from 12.00. There is a car park available or you can reach the Swan by bus service 762/765 from Keighley to Ilkley, X84 from Leeds to Skipton (X84 runs Mon-Sat day time only).

The award will be presented on Tuesday 12th October 2010 at about 8.30 p.m.
