The Swan makes it two.

The Swan from across the roadOur Autumn Pub of the Season is the Swan at Addingham, which regularly features in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Licensees Ian and Nikki Frost have been running the pub since May 2008 and this is the second time they have won the award.

The Swan dates back around 200 years and retains a traditional feel and layout. On entering, the small central bar lies ahead of you with serveries on three sides. At least four cask ales are always available with a strong ‘LocAle’ focus. Ilkley Mary Jane and Copper Dragon Best Bitter are regulars and Ilkley Black has recently become so popular that it is almost permanent. The range usually increases to five or even six beers at weekends. Admire the photos of bygone Addingham while you are being served.

There is a choice of drinking areas, all warmed by real fires on colder days: the small room on the left has a dart board and Sky TV; the cosy snug to the left of the bar has bench seats along one central table, perfect for quiet conversation. To the right a larger open plan area has a newly installed multi-fuel stove and a wonderful old range, which may be original. With outside tables in front of the pub and a beer garden and large car park to the rear, the Swan has everything even a pub dog (Jess, an Old English Sheepdog) and three pub ghosts, one of which is also canine!

There is plenty going on too: folk music every Monday evening, ‘Swan Acoustic’ the first and third Tuesdays of the month, quiz night on Wednesdays (come early it gets quite packed!) and live bands on Saturdays. If that were not enough, the pub holds two beer festivals a year, one in early June and the next one on October 26th - 28th. For details of events go to the Swan‘s web-site

A Special Tapas menu is available on Wednesday and Friday evenings, alongside the standard menu comprising a range of home cooked food. Food is also available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday lunchtimes, and Saturday evening. A traditional roast dinner is always available on Sunday.

Arriving by bus from Keighley or Skipton, the stop is right outside the door. From the opposite direction you have to walk a few yards further. The 762/765 Keighley to Ilkley service operates throughout the day including evenings and Sundays. Check times at http://www.wymetro.com/BusTravel/bustimetables/700. Unfortunately the X84 Leeds Skipton bus only runs Monday to Saturday with no evening service.

he award will be presented on Tuesday 25th September at about 8.30 p.m.
