A hostelry fit for Kings

Such is the attraction of “the Kings” that people have been known to jump off the Ilkely to Keighley bus to savour its delights, down a swift half and then get back on the same bus to continue their journey! That‘s a bit extreme; the Kings Arms in Silsden is somewhere to enjoy at leisure...

Voted Pub of the Season for Summer 2013 by Keighley and Craven branch of CAMRA, the Kings has been run by Lisa Keeley and Francis Huggins since December 2003. Regular beers Theakston Best Bitter and Saltaire Blonde (LocAle accredited) are complemented by 4 ever-changing guest beers of varying strength and provenance. The range when we researched this article was Anchor Mild, Revolutions Atomic Blonde, Inveralmond Independence and Holdens Special Bitter. Beers from tiny SIlsden brewery Barley Bottom make occasional appearances. A traditional cider, often from Westons, is usually available see the “Cask Ales” board for details. The staff will fetch it for you from the cellar.

Still retaining a fairly traditional layout, there are three interlinked drinking areas at the front of the pub and a pool room to the rear. The upstairs function room can be booked for meetings and parties. In summer the small beer garden is open for alfresco drinking, and there are tables at the front where you can watch the world go by at any time of year. A covered smoking area can be found by the back door on the way to the car park.

A bustling community local, with efficient and friendly staff, there is often something going on at the Kings. On Tuesday evenings you‘ll find an “acoustic jam session”. Wednesday is quiz night. Thursday is “Open Mic. Night” and on Sunday evenings you can take your chance with the fun quiz, bingo and Higher and Lower cards. Last but not least, Lisa and Francis run two beer festivals per year. The next one is expected to be in October, but no dates have yet been finalised. I have been told these festivals are excellent, but I keep missing them as Lisa and Francis only seem to organise them when they know I‘m going to be away....

The Kings Arms is open from 12 noon every day. Food is served Tuesday to Sunday lunchtimes from 12 to 3.

The Pub of the Season presentation will take place on Tuesday 25th June at about 8.30 p.m.
