Dales community pub wins new Pub of the Season award

Hayley and Ashley Crampton show off the bar in the Clarendon, Hebden, Pub of the Season Summer 2014.Hayley and Ashley Crampton have been running the Clarendon, Hebden, a community free house a couple of miles east of Grassington, for 5 years. Prior to that they managed the Craven Arms in neighbouring Appletreewick. The Cramptons pride themselves on running a family-friendly pub serving good home-cooked Yorkshire food. Since taking over they have increased the range of real ales from 3 to 5. The regular beers are Timothy Taylors Boltmaker, Tetley Bitter and one from the Black Sheep range. This summer they are also selling Wharfedale Blond while participating in Wharfedale Brewery Ales Way promotion.

Ashley is the chef, and where the food is concerned, he aims to provide something for everybody. All meals are cooked to order and they cater for special dietary requirements, along with fresh fish dishes and plenty of choice for vegetarians. The Clarendon has 3 guest bedrooms check out their special offers on accommodation.

The Clarendon, Hebden, Pub of the Season Summer 2014.After the Hebden village post office shut, the Cramptons opened “The Stables”, a farm shop and general store, in a barn next to the pub. Much of the produce sold in the shop is provided by the pub‘s suppliers. Although The Stables has published opening times, the Cramptons are keen to emphasise: “If the pub is open, the shop can be opened too please just come in and ask us.” Being community focused, they frequently host charity fund-raising events and as their children attend Burnsall School they have also held fund-raising events for the school. They have been known to deliver their meals to villagers and to give local customers a lift home! Quiz night is on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

The Pub of the Season award was presented on the 15th July, when branch members travelled there by mini-bus. Pride of the Dales 72 shuttle service runs 3-4 times per day Monday to Saturday from Skipton and Grassington and on summer Sundays the 812 Dalesbus service stops twice in each direction. Walkers and cyclists are made welcome and these are probably the best ways to enjoy the scenery.
