Beer Engine pulls them in
A micropub which has been open for just over a year has received a well-deserved prize from local real ale fans. Keighley and Craven Campaign for Real Ale has chosen the Beer Engine, in Albert Street, Skipton, as the Pub Of The Season for Summer 2015.
Former solicitor Steve Banks and his partner Janet Langton started the pub with the express intention of having no music or television - just “good ale and good conversation.” The Beer Engine has grown in its first year to be a real hub for the community. It has five real ales, always interesting and always well-kept.
It‘s easy to choose your beer, as the pumps are always in the same format. From the left a blonde ale, a pale hoppy ale, a traditional bitter style, an unusual or strong beer and, on the far right pump, a dark beer. There really is always something for everyone. They also have a decent range of bottled foreign beers and a couple of real ciders and perries. The casks are on show in a chilled cabinet behind the bar.
There is no music, no slot machines and no food - just a real pub, with real beer and real people. The ambience created by Steve and Janet, allied to the pub‘s knowledgeable staff, were among the main reasons CAMRA members chose the Beer Engine for the award. The pub also supports other local beer-oriented events, such as the Coach Street Haloween beer festival and CAMRA‘s Skipton beer festival in May/June.
The Beer Engine is closed Monday and Tuesdays and open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to about 11 p.m.
The award was presented to Janet and Steve on 10th September 2015 - see photo.
