Popular micropub voted Pub of the Season

In July members of the Keighley and Craven CAMRA met in Gallagher‘s Ale House, Cross Hills, to present the pub with the branch Pub of the Season award for Summer 2019. This is a popular micropub (sister pub to Skipton‘s Beer Engine), which opened during December 2015, in what used to be Gallagher‘s bookmakers shop. The pub was chosen to receive the award primarily because the beer quality and range of real ales are very good. They serve five changing beers normally including a blonde, a pale, a bitter, a dark beer and a strong or speciality beer. Therefore there is a good range of different beer styles, so there is normally at least one beer available to satisfy most people‘s preferences. The cellar can be viewed through a window to the left of the bar. The prices are reasonable and you normally get a full pint without having to ask for a top up. They also sell real cider and a good range of bottles, so there are a variety of drinks available for non-real ale drinkers.

Pictured left to right (back row) are manager Steve Banks and bar staff Bev & Carrie. Front row are managers Janet Langton & Steve Gregory. The pub attracts a mixture of clientele such as locals, dog walkers and cyclists as well as occasional visitors. Everyone is made welcome giving a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are no fruit machines or piped music, so the atmosphere is created by the friendly banter of staff and customers. Table top games, such as dominoes, and reading books, local newspapers, leaflets etcetera are provided to occupy people wanting to do more than just chat. There is live music occasionally. In summary this is a quiet friendly pub with good beer. The pub is closed Monday and Tuesday. It is open from 3.00 pm to 10.00 pm Wednesday and Thursday, 1.00 pm to 11.00 pm Friday, 12 noon to 11.00 pm Saturday, and 12 noon to 8.00 pm Sunday.

Regular bus services between Keighley and Skipton (service 66) and between Keighley and Burnley (service M4) stop near the pub. A bus stop is about 3 seconds walk from the front door if heading towards Keighley (M4) or Skipton (66)! Parking is available adjacent to the Co-op store round the corner. Jenny Baker Route 66 to Keighley and M4 towards Lancashire are a few seconds further away and on the other side of the road. If parking, be sure to use the Council‘s part of the car park, not the Co-op‘s which threatens a fine if you stay more than 30 minutes.
